This covers the animated piece in every form it takes, the web version, the Mac screensaver and the Mac app, including its artwork, the generated iris textures, and the code, including the shader programs and the routines that move, blink, startle and direct the eyes. It is not in the public domain.

Font Credit

Milonga is a display typeface. Night Watch uses it for its title; every other piece of text is set in ordinary system fonts, which are supplied by your device and are not part of the artwork.

“Milonga” is Copyright 2011 The Milonga Project Authors (Pablo Impallari, Brenda Gallo and Rodrigo Fuenzalida), with Reserved Font Name “Milonga”, and is licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1, a free, open licence that permits the font to be used, studied, embedded and redistributed, including bundled with software such as this. Its principal restrictions are that the font may not be sold on its own, and that any redistribution must carry the copyright notice and the licence with it. The complete, unmodified licence text ships with every copy of Night Watch (the file Milonga-OFL.txt).

Used unmodified

The font file is used exactly as published, with no changes and no format conversion, so the Reserved Font Name is not in play. The Mac screensaver and app bundle the same file and use it only inside their own process.

CC0 does not require attribution, but it is credited here anyway. The recording was edited for looping playback and re-encoded at a lower bitrate. Night sounds are off until you turn them on, in the web version's panel or the screensaver's settings.

Night Watch is provided free of charge, as-is and without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Your use of it is at your own risk.

You are welcome to watch it, link to it, and share the link, and to install the Mac screensaver on your own Macs. You may not copy, redistribute, or republish the artwork, the code, or the piece as a whole, or create derivative works from them, without written permission. You may not present the work as your own or remove the attribution.

Because the work is the moving piece itself, the following are also prohibited without written permission:

Recording and distributing it. You may not record, stream, or distribute video (or sequences of screenshots) of Night Watch, whether or not for profit, other than a short excerpt used to review, discuss, or report on it, of a length no greater than the review reasonably requires, with the work named.
Embedding it elsewhere. You may not frame, embed, mirror, proxy, or otherwise incorporate a view of it into another website, application, stream, or product.
Taking the pieces. You may not extract, copy, adapt, or reuse any of its parts individually, the textures, the shader programs, the simulation and director code, in any medium or product, any more than the whole. This applies equally to a single image file, a single function, and to re-implementing the same routines from this code.
Selling it as a feature. You may not sell, lease, or offer any product or service that includes Night Watch or a view of it as a feature, for example a digital frame, an interactive display, a kiosk, a screensaver product, or a hardware bundle that loads or plays it.

Privacy Policy

The short version: Night Watch collects nothing about you.

The web version renders entirely in your browser. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics script of its own, embeds no tracking pixels, shows no advertising, and has no accounts, logins or forms. It makes no requests to any third party, and nothing you do on the page is recorded or transmitted.

The Mac screensaver and app make no network requests at all. They do not check for updates, download anything, or send anything about you or how you use them. Your settings are stored on your own Mac only (in the screensaver's own preferences) and never leave it. The night sounds recording is bundled with the screensaver, so nothing is downloaded to play it.

The pages on johnbeckett.info are delivered by an ordinary web host, which, like any host, processes routine connection data (such as IP addresses) in order to serve a page and protect the service against abuse, and may keep aggregate, non-personal traffic statistics. Nothing here is linked to anything you do in Night Watch.

Because nothing personal is collected, there is nothing to request, correct, export or delete.
